EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF THE NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR

After graduating college Naturopathic doctors must attend four-year, graduate level naturopathic medical schools which have similar admission requirements to other medical schools. Here they are educated in all the same basic sciences as are M.D.'s with the addition of naturopathic therapies and naturopathic philosophy.

The basic sciences include: anatomy, histology, microbiology,  physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, immunology, clinical and physical diagnosis, lab diagnosis, radiology, embryology,  public health, and research and epidemiology.  They also study differential diagnosis, dermatology, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics  including natural childbirth, men's health,  minor surgery,  emergency care, and orthopedics as well as a semester each of hydrotherapy, soft tissue manipulation, nutritional biochemistry, parenteral therapy, venipuncture, and  physio-therapeutics.

In addition, three to four years training is required in each of the naturopathic oriented subjects of Asian medicine,  botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine,  counseling, clinical nutrition, naturopathic manipulation, and ethics and jurisprudence.

A year of clinical internship is required. They earn the  Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree (N.D.) after completion of classroom, practical, and clinical study.
